Fällkniven S1: an excellent, medium-sized outdoor knife
The Fällkniven S1 is a medium-sized outdoor knife. You could see it as the big brother to the famous Fällkniven F1. With a blade length of 13 cm, the S1 is big enough for all common outdoor tasks. Building a shelter, gutting game and processing wood for a campfire are child's play with this knife.
Features of the Fällkniven S1
Fällkniven S1: different versions
The Fällkniven S1 is available in different steel types, like VG10 and CoS. Both steel types are very strong and can be sharpened to a razor-sharp edge. The blade is made from laminated steel. This means that the CoS or VG10 core is placed between two layers of softer, more stainless steel. As a result, the blade can handle quite a lot.
Fällkniven S1 handle
The Fällkniven S1x and S1xb have a full-tang construction, meaning the steel of the blade runs throughout the handle covered by Thermorun scales. A full-tang construction guarantees a rock-solid knife. The handles of the S1 and the S1 Pro cover the tang. The tang also protrudes a bit at the end of the handle, Having the metal covered by scales is particularly useful in cold climates, where low temperatures and humidity can lead to stiff fingers or even frost damage from prolonged contact with steel.
Fällkniven S1 convex grind
Most fixed knives produced by Fällkniven are enhanced with a convex grind. That means that the edge is slightly rounded (hence the name convex) as it tapers off to the finest point of the cutting edge along the blade. As such, the blade gets that famous convex shape that characterizes the convex grind. It results in a stronger edge than a flat grind would have. Contrary to what is often thought, sharpening a convex grind is actually not difficult at all! Read more about sharpening convex grinds here.
