Fällkniven F1 vs S1

The Fällkniven F1 and Fällkniven S1 are two of the most popular outdoor knives on the market today. But which do you choose? We made an overview of the similarities and differences to make sure you can make the best choice.

The different versions of the F1 and S1

In addition to the differences between specifically the F1 and S1 there are many different versions of both knives. There is, for instance, the Pro collection, the X collection and even the 'regular' F1 has numerous different options in terms of sheaths and types of steel. In this comparison we mainly focus on the differences between the F1 and S1 as a model, not on all different editions.

Similarities between the Fällkniven F1 and S1

Both collections are produced in Japan. The finish is excellent. As you might expect from a fixed Fällkniven knife both collections are enhanced with a convex edge. A great grind that is incredibly versatile in use. Whether you use it for woodwork, hunting or outdoor cooking.

Both collections are available with mostly the same types of steel. Think of VG10 and CoS. Even though there are also versions of the F1 enhanced with 3G steel. But that is not what you have to base your choice on, the differences are small.

It is very typical that the handles of both knives are fairly similar. The length and thickness between both editions is similar, regardless of whether you choose a F1 or S1.

Differences between the Fällkniven F1 and S1

Fällkniven F1: the pilot knife

If the handles are the same, the blades must be different. Of the two the F1 is most compact. The Fällkniven F1 was designed as a survival knife for fighter jet pilots. They needed a compact knife they could carry on their equipment in case they had to leave the aircraft with the help of the ejection seat. The blade of the standard Fällkniven F1 is 9.7 cm long. As such it is large enough for small survival tasks. A One Stick Fire, for instance. But you can also easily use it for food prep, and even hunters appreciate the F1 because of its construction. The F1 is enhanced with a droppoint-shaped blade.

Fällkniven S1: Forest Knife

The Fällkniven S1 was not designed with the limitation of a pilot's outfit. You can tell when you look at the blade which is 13 cm long. As such it quite a lot larger than the F1. You also notice this when you use it. With the F1 you have a little more control over the fine cutting tasks around the tip, this is less with the S1. The advantage of the S1 is that you have more length, perfect when batoning wood. In terms of blade shape the S1 in between a clippoint and droppoint. Even though it is leaning more towards a droppoint.

Grind

Both knives are, of course, enhanced with a convex grind. But there are still differences between the two. The convex grind on the standard S1 is located a little 'lower' on the blade than with the F1. The difference between a traditional 'saber grind' and a 'full flat grind'. This means that the blade of the S1 is a little stronger. Not surprising considering the fact that the blade is also larger. This knife is more suited for heavy-duty tasks.

But which will you choose?

They are very similar. But which size will suit you best? It all comes down to personal preference, and the way you comprise your gear for an outdoor trip. Will you also take an axe with you for the more demanding tasks? Go with the Fällkniven F1. Will you only bring your knife? Go with the Fällkniven S1 because you can also use it for batoning and such because of its longer blade. Now you know which size you prefer you can determine if you go with the 'standard' version of the S1 or F1, or whether you will select a knife from the X or Pro collection.
