Fire steel

A fire steel, also known as a firestarter, is a compact tool that helps you easily create sparks to start a fire. Ideal for bushcraft, camping or emergencies. A fire steel continues to work reliably in wet or cold conditions, unlike matches, which get wet, and lighters, which run out of fuel. This is a must-have for outdoor enthusiasts. Available in various sizes and with a range of handles, so there’s always a model to suit your adventure.

Features of fire steels

Fire steels are known for their reliability and ease of use. To use a fire steel and striker, scrape the striker firmly along the rod to produce sparks that can reach temperatures of up to 3000 °C. With those hot sparks, you can easily light dry tinder, and choosing the right tinder makes a big difference to how quickly you get a fire going. View all tinder here.

A striker is specially designed to efficiently scrape material off the fire steel. As a result, you get more sparks and greater consistency than with, say, the spine of a knife. That is why a striker is often included as standard: it provides greater control, better performance and reduces the need for other tools.

Many models feature an ergonomic handle and an integrated grip for extra grip and control. In addition, fire steels work in wet, cold and windy conditions and are available in a range of styles, from compact keyring models to robust versions designed for heavy-duty use.

How to choose the best fire steel

You should choose the best fire steel based on how you use it. Check, for example, whether a striker is included. If you have a knife with a sharp spine, you can use it perfectly well and a separate striker isn’t strictly necessary. It also depends on whether you have a sheath. If you carry your fire steel in a sheath with a fire steel slot, it will be safely secured there. If you want to carry it loose, a sheath is recommended to prevent the fire steel from getting damaged or breaking.

Lastly, visibility is something to bear in mind. Fire steels are often available in bright colours such as red or orange, so you’re less likely to lose them when out in the wild. Curious about other ways to make a fire? Discover them on the page with all firestarters.
