This **Naniwa Advance Stone sharpening set** is comprised of three Japanese whetstones. The top-quality whetstones have grainsizes 220, 800 and 3000. They are a part of the Advance Stone collection: the successor of the Naniwa Super Stone Collection.


## Synthetic resin-bound sharpening stones


The Advance Stones are synthetic resin-bound. Naniwa takes care of the production of this binding agent themselves. Perfectly aligned to the grain size of the sharpening stone. It is one of the reasons why the Advance Stones are so incredibly good. They are hard, do not wear out easily and have a high concentration of sharpening particles. As a result your knife won’t quickly ‘bite’ into your stone and the sharpening process will go quickly. In addition, they are *splash & go*: simply add some water and you are good to go.


After sharpening it is important to properly dry off the Advance Stones and allow them to completely dry at room temperature. Do not put them on the heater! Once dry store them in a dry, dark place to prevent small cracks.


## About the grain size


Sharpening stones come in various grain sizes. The larger the number the finer the grain. The finer the grain, the sharper the results. You start the sharpening process with a coarse grain after which you continue with a finer grain. Steps of a factor two to three between the different grain sizes are perfect.


## Indication for choosing the right sharpening stone




* Grain 200 to 600: great to restore the edge of blunt knives

* Grain 800 to 1000: great to sharpen knives that are still in good shape

* Grain 2000 to 3000: for a sharper result than most knives that are delivered to your doorstep

* Grain 5000 to 12000: for razor-sharp knives

As I was really excited getting these stones i am sad to report that they didn't meet my expectations. 220 grit is very soft for s30v of my benchmade osborne. Blade was basically scraping off the stone creating thick paste. 800 grit is slightly better so I spent more time on it to get some solid edge on the blade but still not perfect. 3000 is for polishing which is ok. Looking forward to try Chocera pro of friend of mine to see the difference.

The 220 bit on the coarse side. 800 and 3000 are perfect. May opt to longer stones in the future. Especially if working on longer blades.

I am not an expert when it comes to splash and go stones, but for all I know, the quality is very solid. I have to give one star less because I personally don't understand what the advantage is of building them this thin. I use them on the skerper sink bridge, and because of the height of the wood that keeps the stone in place, I can basically use only half the stone before I am going to have to think about some fancy construction to be able to continue using it. For thicker stones, it would at least take longer until this happens, therefore inreasing the usability of the stones.
